What is HEMA?
HEMA, a light-curing monomer commonly found in gel nail polish, is also known as Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate or 2-hydroxyethyl Methacrylate When HEMA is polymerised under UV/LED light, gel nails become hardened and shiny. HEMA is also used in other industries, such as medicine and dentistry.
Are there other toxic ingredients in traditional nail polish?
Formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate are the “big three” ingredients considered to be the most potentially disruptive. Many nontoxic formulations are now going further, though, to eliminate other harmful ingredients like formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, and TPHP. When a nontoxic or natural nail polish doesn’t contain those additives, that’s when you’ll see 5-, 7-, 9-, or 10-free written on the label.
“Traditional nail polishes can have potentially harmful toxins that become dangerous when they are airborne and breathed into our bodies consistently over time. One example of such an ingredient is toluene, which can cause damage to the nervous system with high exposure and was traditionally included in polish formulas to create a smooth finish on the nail.” says Nadine Abramcyk, cofounder and head of brand at New York City salon Tenoverten.
Why is HEMA bad for you?
When semi-cured nail stickers and nail polish containing HEMA are misused or repeatedly absorbed through the skin or nail plate, in some cases, it can cause an allergic reaction leading to eczema, inflammation, and severe skin irritation.
This can happen to anyone, even if they have had no previous reactions to a particular semi-cured gel nail sticker containing HEMA.
Signs and symptoms of a HEMA allergy include…
Contact Dermatitis: HEMA can cause contact dermatitis, which leads to skin inflammation, itching, redness, and a rash. Prolonged or repeated exposure to HEMA may worsen these symptoms.
Nail Bed Inflammation: Some individuals may experience inflammation or swelling around the nail bed due to HEMA exposure, leading to discomfort and pain.
